The waist of a shoe is the region between the heel and the front of the sole, i.e. the area of the sole that lies immediately below the arches of the feet. Waists can be bevelled, fiddled or square. Square waist is the preferred style on the continent and is also a feature common on factory made shoes as machines cannot as yet produce a good bevel or fiddle waist. However with handmade shoes a bevel or fiddle waist adds a degree of elegance to the shoe which is inimitable.
