Orthopaedic & Orthotics

For the individual with an orthopaedic condition or who is in need of orthotics, the issue of footwear is often a problematic one. Bespoke footwear can offer the perfect solution. Firstly, the corrective features needed to alleviate the condition can be build into the footwear directly. Alternatively it can be made to expressly accommodate 3rd party orthotics (inserts, etc). Of these two approaches the first is by far the more effective.

The incorporation into the footwear of the necessary supports for minor conditions can normally be done without much of a problem. However, for the more severe cases, the work involved can present the craftsmen with a most taxing challenge. It requires the person taking the measure to correctly identify the problem and the lastmaker to accurately incorporate the remedial features needed onto the last while ensuring that its shape remains the best aesthetic form achievable. It further requires of the closer the ability to produce an upper that is pleasing and finally for the maker to build a pair of footwear that maintains a balance between functionality, comfort and looks.

On a realistic level however not all serious orthopaedic work can be successfully tackled and it is therefore important to seek the shoemakers opinion as to the feasibility of the work beforehand to avoid disappointment.
